Family Travel in South Africa

Family Header

South Africa is a great family destination with its predominantly warm weather and variety of landscapes and places of interest.  It is easy to find suitable accommodation throughout the country that can comfortably accommodate a family whilst travelling.  More and more game lodges are opening up to family travel and offer specially designed activities to keep the young ones entertained, and save, whilst they learn more about the African bush.  Keep in mind that young children (generally under the age of 10 years) are not permitted on open safari vehicles unless a private vehicle is booked.

If you are concerned about Malaria whilst traveling with children - keep in mind that there are malaria free game reserve in Madikwe and the Waterberg which would work well as substitutes for the Kruger National Park.

Families can choose between guided itineraries or to travel independently in their own rental car.  The road infrastructure is relatively good making self drive holidays very enjoyable for first timers. For the more adventurous at heart there is also the option of a self drive camping holiday with a camping equipped vehicle or motor-home (for those who want a little bit more comfort!).  A camping trip is a great cost effective way of seeing the country and enjoying some of the most popular activities on offer.  For sample camping itineraries have a look at our camping website on

Alternatively, South Africa's airlines connect the major cities and towns by air.  Air travel is a popular way of combining two main destinations on opposite side of the country as this saves a lot on travel time and more convenient when traveling with kids.  A good example of this is combining Kruger and Cape Town with flights.

There are also rail travel options but these are mainly restricted between Johannesburg and Cape Town with luxury trains offering a better variety of routes along with the luxury price tag.
